The Ministry of Finance warns against a new wave of frauds using micro-accounting

The new rules on the so-called tax microaccount have only been in force for a few weeks and not all taxpayers have been able to understand the nature of the changes. This ignorance is used by cheaters.

Tax microaccounts are bank accounts assigned individually to each taxpayer. From 1 January 2020 each taxpayer is to regulate payments related to PIT, CIT and VAT through a micro-account. With the solution introduced, taxpayers will not have to confirm existing numbers of tax offices.

The assumption is to reduce the number of mistaken transfers to the wrong account, as well as to improve the handling of PIT, CIT and VAT payments. Other taxes are paid under the current rules. Microaccounts can also be used to regulate interest on tax arrears. The micro account number can be checked in the generator at any time.

The use of a micro account does not involve any fees.

The use of the amendment to the individual tax account is just another installment, the use of the already known SMS fraud method for several years

The revision of the micro-account rules is therefore only a technical change concerning the way taxes are paid. The system is not used to inform the taxpayer whether the amount of paid dan is correct. Unfortunately, the lack of taxpayers' knowledge of what micro-account is, in fact, a feed for fraudsters.

For several days now, information has been circulating on text messages calling on taxpayers to pay off alleged debt on a micro-account. The messages contain a link to suggest that upon clicking the SMS address will be moved to a website that will allow payment.

Ministry warning

Such false SMS messages are an attempt at fraud. The Ministry of Finance issued a communication in which it stresses that the tax administration is not the broadcaster of these messages. Text messages of this type are false and contain a link that can be dangerous. Opening the links contained in such messages and sending replies to the sender may result in the transmission of data to unauthorised persons.

Similar frauds

The use of the amendment to the individual tax account is just another installment, the use of the already known "s SMS" method for several years. The pattern of the scammers using this method is very similar.

They impersonate telephone operators, Internet providers, television or other services, or as they do today, tax administration staff. The news reports a small amount of backlog. The SMS also contains a link that redirects the user to the bank's website, allegedly to facilitate debt repayment.

After clicking on the link, users are redirected to the bank's fake page, and after entering the login and password, they authorize transfers to a small amount. After some time, much larger, often multi-thousands amounts disappear from the accounts of the deceived people.

For example, a few days ago, the media described a fraud case in which the recipient received a message to pay the parcel delivery fee. In the absence of payment, the consignment he ordered was to be cancelled. Upon clicking on the click, the user was redirected to the bank's website to make a fee of 0.9 Money.

Some time later, the recipient's account disappeared almost 10,000 PLN.

At this point, it is worth repeating the ministry's call and sensitizing all taxpayers to be very careful about information on various types of backlogs. It is especially important not to use the links attached to the messages and not to log into bank accounts. In the event of doubt on the balance of its obligations, the service office of the relevant tax office may provide information.
