From 3 June new EU rules on the movement of money across borders

3 June 2021 EU legislation enters into force [1], which extend the duties of, among others, people carrying money across the border. If at least 10,000 EUR, the entry and exit from the EU will require a declaration of these measures to the competent customs authorities of Customs and Tax Service or Border Guard authorities. The means of transport don't matter.

Regulation (EU) 2018/1672 extends the responsibilities of persons moving money across borders and border control areas. This concerns the movement of cash in transport, for example money imported into or exported from the Union in postal, courier, cargo or container cargo shipments. The definition of cash has also been extended to include goods used as highly liquid storage measures and prepaid cards.

Person who carries at least 10,000 EUR, When entering or leaving the Union, it must make a declaration of these measures to the competent customs authorities of the Customs and Tax Service or Border Guard. The means of transport doesn't matter.

How to Report Money Transport

Where the transport money is at least 10,000 EUR are imported into or exported from the Union:

  • if the declaration is made by a traveller, he is obliged to report the money,
  • if the money is sent in consignments - the customs authorities may require the consignor or the consignee or their representative to submit a declaration of release of the money within the time limit, as the case may be 30 days.
